主旨: Taiwan is not part of China!
Dear editor:

I am writing to express my displeasure at your May issue which has a map of Taiwan and China in the same color. I understand that your reasoning is based on the U.S. One China Policy. In this policy the U.S. only “acknowledges” China's claim over Taiwan. In other words, the United States does not "recognize" Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan, as you erroneously argue in your correspondence with other concerned organizations.

In addition, as a citizen of Taiwan and reader of the National Geographic, I would like to stress that we (Taiwan) are not part of China. The government of Taiwan long ago renounced its claims to represent and govern the four billion people in China. Your claim that Taiwan is part of China is the greatest insult to all of us living on this free and democratic land.

Lastly, in the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty, the international community (including the U.S.) purposefully left the status of Taiwan, formerly a Japanese colony, undetermined. This remains the U.S. position today. It is a mistake to interpret this as "the U.S. recognizing Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan." For your information, many other esteemed international publications opt to portrait the cross-strait situation the way it is without any arbitrary interpretation. For example, the Economist, Time magazine, the New York Times and others have all chosen to label Taiwan and China with different colors on their maps. They do so out of consideration that Taiwan and China are currently ruled by two different governments. As a citizen of Taiwan, I urge you to show Taiwan and China with different colors to be true to the political realities in the Taiwan Strait.

Sincerely, (your name 妳或你的大名) ********************

最後, 再次感謝各位的支持. 因為有大家的熱忱, 台灣將變得更美好.
世界都在看,讓我們一起綻放真台灣!
